The Second Draft is a Love Letter

The first draft is for me. It is messy and honest and often embarrassing. It is where I discover what I actually think.

The second draft is different. It is a love letter to the reader — an attempt to make the work worthy of their attention, their evening, their quiet hour before bed.

That is why I revise slowly. You do not rush a letter you have waited years to send.
